Worst accident I've seen - be cautious around large trucks
« on: September 22, 2010, 18:48:29 »
I'm trying out a new schedule this week with the hopes of saving some drive time, unfortunately yesterday was terrible for traffic.

As soon as I got onto the freeway traffic was backed up in the morning. That was a bad sign. I immediately turned on the radio to get some information about the traffic. After a little while I heard about a bad accident in Tampa that involved a police officer and a tractor-trailer. When a co-worker got into work I found out that the police officer had been killed at the scene.

After work my trip home seemed fairly normal until I got closer to home. At an intersection in front of a local school I saw one of the worst accidents that I've ever seen - I couldn't quite tell what I was looking at, but I knew immediately that whoever was in that lump of metal was dead. Traffic was at a stand-still in the lane opposite of where the accident was, as police officers were turning cars around to find another route. While I was sitting there I saw a bit more of what was there and realized it was a pickup truck.

Today I was a bit paranoid driving around any large trucks and as I'm writing this I'm recalling some of my experiences driving large trucks while in the Marines. I'm not sure on all the situations surrounding these accidents, but I hope that those of you reading this will keep in mind that little vehicles can stop and go much quicker than those large trucks can react and might even require more room than you would imagine.
"Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? ... OK, well, the button on the side. Is it glowing?... Yeah, you need to turn it on. Err, the button turns it on. Yeah, you do know how a button works, don't you? No, not on clothes." - Roy (The IT Crowd)
