Hey guys,
I got an excellent condition Nikko Thor with extras up for grabs if anyone is after one...

Ahh it's yours, how fast is that thing with the 8.4v

It is pretty peppy with the 8.4v. I think the most noticeable thing is the acceleration. Probably a bit higher top speed as well, but I haven't taken out the speed gun with it, so I am not sure of the exact speed increase.

Would it fold up against a bandit in a race you think? I've been thinking about getting a Thor but I don't know anything about nikkos

Well, 90's Nikko vehicles are a lot better in the level of quality and durability when compared to Tyco. Some would say Nikko was almost hobby grade quality, but not quite. However, they are a lot bigger and heavier than Tyco vehicles of the same time period. I would think that a Bandit and a Thor, for example, would have pretty close top speeds. The Bandit would probably out accelerate a Thor on the street, but when it comes to off-road capability a Thor would run circles around a Bandit with its higher clearance and twin 380 motor 4WD. It is kind of hard to compare Tyco and Nikko vehicles though as they are kind of designed for different purposes.

The Nikko's are comparible to many Tamiya's. Many Nikko's have replacable bushings for the wheels and in the gear box, and are digital proportional. Pretty big step up from most the tyco's.
I belive the bandit is a 1/12th scale, and this nikko is a 1/10th. The Thor is the same size as the popular tamiya Black Foot.
I myself am a fan of the 2wd vertion with the single 540 instead of the twin 380's. Seems to have more tourqe.

Yea, early Nikko and Tamiya were very similar, especially their buggies. Also, on a side note, Radio Shack and Nikko are pretty much the same trucks, or were in the 90s anyways. Most parts of their bigger trucks and buggies are actually interchangeable. There was an even bigger truck than Thor made by Radio Shack that had a Ford F-150 body and dual 540 motors, but it was too heavy and took forever to get up to speed. Yea, those single 540 2wd Nikko trucks, like the Scorpion, were pretty cool also. They are kind of like big Bandits ;D
Speaking of scale of RCs, this is where things become rather inconsistent. Different brands seem to define their own scales. For example, some would call a Thor 1/10, but then again a Tamiya Bruiser is called 1/10. Both the Thor and Bruiser have a Toyota Hilux body, but the Thor body is quite a bit smaller than a Bruiser. Then again, I have a HPI Desert Trophy truck that is claimed to be 1/12, but it is bigger than a Bruiser 1/10 body. If you ask me, I would say Thor is 1/12, a Tamiya Bruiser is 1/10 and a Tyco Bandit is around a 1/14 or 1/15 scale.

The scorpion is the one I'm missing from my collection. I've been seeing a few here and there on craigslist and ebay, but have'nt pulled the trigger yet. It was a good performer with the lighter buggy chassis with 540 motor/7.2 pack, but with truck body's and wheels. IIRC it could pull wheelies nicely and still have a fast top speed. The Scorpion 2 is just "meh" with the smaller motor and lower current 9.6.

I could go hook my 8.4 up to the thor i have and race it against one of the bandits. I believe the bandit has better acceleration but the thor will have higher top speed if I remember right

So nikkos at stock can handle a higher voltage battery? Rather where tycos I assume couldn't like if I would put an 8.4v in my sf traxx it probably would kill it.

Nikko electronics that are digital proportional are quite a bit more resilient than any Tyco electronics. I have had Tyco electronics fail multiple times on different vehicles with standard voltage, so I really doubt you could get away with higher than stock voltage on any Tyco model, but I haven't tried it.

Just about any toy R/C can handle one extra cell. Any more and you start to push it.
My tyco super rebound has been running fine on a 9.6 pack, I think it's suppose to be 6.0v? maybe? I dont remember.

I'm pretty sure a super rebound does take a bigger battery.
A regular rebound is a 6v

it is a beautiful truck if it doesnt sell on ebay pm me i might be interested in it it would go well with my nikko scorpion, and landcruiser which shares the chassis as the thor
