Title: taiyo edgerunner
Post by: stussels on February 12, 2012, 14:41:16
anyone a fan of the edgerunner cars?  i just got a new pair should be here tomorrow.  i now have 2 pair of 27/49 mhz 9.6v ;D  plus a parts car :P  these cars are indestructable and fly off road.

so that guy on ebay that has all the oddball preproduction tyco stuff puts up some edgerunner bodies.  saw this clear one and had to snatch it up.  looks production ready. except its all hand painted and trimmed/applied decals.  id like to think its a one of a kind exclusive :D

i took the wing off because i dont like it.  and the rear mounts have been cut off.  looks like he was test fitting this body.  ill use the wing mounting holes for the new rear mounts.

these are the only rc cars that can deal with the abuse and tactics a dog will use if it likes to play with it.  my moms 90lb. lab couldnt break it.  my husky would pick it up by the wheels and carry it around.  she even rode it with her front paws a time or two.  i think if taiyo put a furry body on these and remarketed them as dog toys they wouldnt be able to make them fast enough.

lmao thats funny but very true,,the rebounds hang in there pretty good too,,,that guy has had some pretty cool pieces did you see the hi-jacker pre-production lot?,, i almost bought it,,and should have,,ive watched all his auctions its cool to see how they come about from start to finish

he also has this car the speed freak ,,,pretty crazy and never released, looks like dual motors and was intended to be a wheelie monster judging by the tiny wheels on the very back underside.

the rebounds dont have a chance.  dogs are smart and when they find a weakness they go after it.  the rubber tires didnt last long with my dog.  the edgerunners have big, hard wheels that can take abuse and some hard biting.  plus the edgerunner would run circles around the rebound in grass or anywhere else for that matter.  my gps said it maxed out at 12mph.

i saw his auction for that speed freak thing.  looks like a half baked idea.  thats a modified edgerunner body he used on it.   it appears to use dual motors that skid steer in the rear as the front wheels are fixed.  that guy has been putting up preproduction tyco stuff for years.  i hadnt looked at tycos for a couple of years and then i go back and hes still listing stuff!  well im glad i caught his edgerunner bodies auction anyway

got my new set of edgerunners today.  so stoked to have all these 9.6v's ;D  i put the new body on the non runner chassis.  painted the wheels and set it on my office shelf.  the others are ready for my next dog.

some pics:
notice all the black marks just above the baseboard, some trim damage too.  edgerunner impact area, lol

actually if you look close in the first auction you posted youll see the clear body that i bought off him.  i got him to sell it to me seperate.  the other bodies have a lot of damage.  like they came out of the mold wrong or were melted at some point.

as for batteries, i use whatever the largest nimh i can find.  i wore all mine out so ill be buying new.  never really noticed alot more power out of the large capacity batteries, but much longer runtime.  i gotta be careful not to overheat these guys by running multiple batteries back to back.   ;)  oh btw, where do you get your batteries?

Yeah very true Ive smoked many of tyco/taiyo's over powering them for to long since the standard nicads where only like 600mah i run tenergy packs they run up to 5000mah in nimh and i think have a higher discharge rate,,that's where the extra power comes from i like them alot they can withstand rapid cycles back to back i run there 3s 5000mah 50c w/100c burst lipos in my axial crawler also those puppy's are $100 a pop but the 9.6v 2000mah packs normally run around $12 bucks a piece on ebay or sometimes you can catch a bundle of 2 with a simple charger for $20

so i accidentally picked up a 6v edgerunner.  i thought it was 9.6v ::)  it looked terrible when i got it but cleaned up nice.  no parts will interchange as its just a scaled down 9.6v.  if the 9.6 is for dogs then this 6.0 must be for cats ;D  its the harder to find 27 frequency.  anyone got a 6v battery and charger they dont want?
heres how it looked when i bought it with its "custom" paintjob:

i dont think we ever got that one here.  it would look great in my edge runner collection.  yours is the only one ive seen actually.  i noticed it in your shot of all your cars together.  let me know if you ever get sick of looking at it ;D

interesting to note that this gyromax, which i believe was sold through the discovery channel stores in the mall, is without the taiyo name.  its marked leynian ltd. co.  so taiyo had what seems to be a rough end to its us sales.  i think the edgerunner may have been its final rc here.  cant be certain but if im right its a damn shame.  leynian ltd. no longer exists.  poof.  the end. :'(

lol, you know, i used a motorcycle detailer i use from the honda shop.  called "bike spirits".  that softened the spraypaint up.  then i mixed in a dab of mothers chrome and aluminum polish and i just buffed on it with my bare fingertip.  went over it 3 times like that and by the third time it looked like new.  i was afraid it would take off the factory paint and graphics but they held up through it.  i was surprised too by how well it came out.

bit of a gamble on this one but i had a good feeling.  used a remote from one of my other 27's and it worked just fine   ;D

I want to say the bandit is 14-15 mph and the fast traxx is about the same. I have a pretty acurate radar and could test them.

I was actually thinking about starting an official speed forum posting all the speeds

that would be a great sticky thread!  ill bet i could get my friend to run some of his collection with my gps strapped on.  i need to go recheck the edgerunner, i think it was 18 but its been awhile.

I actually tried to track some speeds today on my iphone with the gps app. Ive tried 3 but they all seem to be waaay off. The closest ive tried so far read out only 14mph on the enforcer and 8mph on the new bright 4wd hobby truck both running 11.1v lipo so i know its reading waaay low.

Im gonna try my bushnell radar tonight and see what it reads.  If all goes well i can start the speed thread and make a huge list of all the old cars and their speeds

yeah something not right there.  i use a garmin forerunner 201 that ive had for 5 or so years.   its always been spot on, you just need to give it a few seconds once you reach top speed to compensate for lag.  i set it to record max speed and send em off down the road.  id check it at least 3 times to get an average in case theres some variance in each run.
Title: Re: taiyo edgerunner
Post by: stussels on February 16, 2013, 23:43:40
checked my edgerunner on my gps, it only got up to 12 mph.  its still super torquey with good ground clearance so doesnt slow much off road so i guess the gearing is the tradeoff.  its a wild chaotic machine anyway.  my dog still loves those things.  never gets old ;D
